The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Impressions

Some of you may or may not have heard about the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion RPG game, which was just recently released for PC and XBOX360. I just got this game (for PC) last week. This game is incredible. What I really like about this game is that it is very customizable and non-linear; meaning, you can be anything, do anything you want in this game.

When you first start the game, you are offered a choice to choose your race, class, and looks. For race, you are given to chose one out of 7 races; 3 human races [Imperial, Nord, Redguard], high elves, dark elves, orc, Khajitt [feline-race], and Argonians [lizard-race]. As for class, there are a lot of classes to choose from, but if you don't like any of the given classes, you can make your own. Finally, you can completely customize the looks of your character to make it look like you or someone else.

Like I said earlier, you can literally choose to be anything you want in this game; you don't always have to be hero or "good guy." For example, besides a hero, you can also be a mage, thief (stealing/pickpocketing people in the streets is fun ;) ), Arena Champion (a la The Gladiator style), vampire (sucking blood on people while they sleep), vampire hunter, murderer, etc.

Note that this is a single-player RPG, not a MMORPG. However, just because it's not a MMORPG does not diminish the fun factor of the game at all, since there is SO MUCH TO DO. "SO MUCH TO DO" actually is a understatement because it has been said by many that this game can take well over 200-300+ hours to really complete everything. :o

The graphics in this game are the best I have seen in a game so far. However, this game is extremely demanding on PC systems, as I have heard that it even has a hard time on dual-GPU PC systems. I have Oblivion currently running at 1280x1024, all sliders maxed, and HDR enabled on a Mobile Athlon XP 2600+ (overclocked to 2.65 GHz), 2 GB PC4000 RAM, and a GeForce 7800 GS (475/1360). After using some performance-enhancing tweaks in this thread, it is very playable on these settings, although in some areas it can get somewhat choppy. Here are some screenshots I taken while playing the game:

I should probably also say this: if you do not have much time, or do not want to be completely addicted to a game, AVOID THIS GAME AT ALL COSTS! That being said, if you want to play an incrediblely deep RPG that will last for a very long time, this is your game. ;)

Cool to hear that you got the game, Ryan. :) Yep, it really is a great (and ADDICTING) game. Have you tried joining any of the guilds yet (Fighters, Mage, Thief, Dark Brotherhood)? I've completed the Thief guild quests and am working on the Fighters and Mage guild quests. I haven't started the Dark Brotherhoold quests yet, but from what I hear, it is very well developed out of all the guild quests.

Oh yeah, you should try to download and install the high quality normal and textures pack in this thread: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=67532

It makes the terrain in the distance look helluva a lot better (instead of looking muddy and blurred) without any performance drawbacks.

Here is some more screenshots that I took from yesterday:
