Y-Corner Minecraft Server

Post by Yoon »

If you haven't heard about Minecraft already, it's an indie in-development game that's been gaining quite a bit of popularity on the net at the moment. It's a world-builder type game, where you essentially can build and craft anything you want, out of blocks.

The gameplay itself is very simple and easy to pick up. As for the graphics, they're very basic; let's just say you don't play Minecraft for the graphics. About the fun factor, this is where Minecraft really shines. As an open-ended game, you can literally spend hours just carving out a landscape, building houses, planting trees, digging tunnels, etc. Since you have to collect resources to build certain things, players will spend some time digging deep underground, where resources like coal, iron, gold, redstone, etc. lay. With the game worlds being enormous, exploration of the map (both above and underground) can take weeks (or months?).

There's also a multiplayer component to this game, as players can join the same world and build/destroy things on the same map. I've setup a 24/7 server for Minecraft. Since the world is constantly being saved, anything you build, change, etc. will be persistant (unless someone else destroys your creations  ).

Server Address: y-corner.game-server.cc
Current Server Version: 1.4_01

Client Download
Spoiler: show
Download Minecraft
(Unzip it anywhere. Type a name for yourself and checkbox "Force Update"! Select multiplayer, and type the server address above to connect!)
The only downsides is that since the game is still in-development, there are bound to be some bugs.

Here's a wiki on crafting certain items: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Crafting

If you connect to the Y-Corner Minecraft Server, here's some commands that will come in handy, especially if you get stuck, which you will.

/help - Displays all available commands
/home - Warps you back to your 'home' location.
/spawn - Warps you back to the server spawn point.
/sethome - Sets your current home location
/playerlist - Lists all the current players on the server.
/item <itemid> <amount> - Creates an item and stores the specified amount in your inventory.

Build away! :P

Spoiler: show
Are you using the client from the link I posted? With that version, enter any user name and password (not the one you registered); it will say authentication failed and it will give you an option to go offline mode. From there, you should be able to get into the server via multiplayer.

Also, make sure you delete any existing ".minecraft" folder from the C:\Users\<YOUR ACCOUNT>\AppData\Roaming\ folder and try extracting the .minecraft folder from the zip file into that location.

UPDATE: Make sure you run minecraft_name.jar. Also, make sure to use the same name when running minecraft_name.jar, if you want to access the character you've been working on

For example, if you use the name "Maestro" when joining the Minecraft server the first time, make sure to use "Maestro" to get access to the character that you used previously. Otherwise, a new name will tell the server that you're a new player and will treat you as such.

In Windows Explorer, press "ALT" to show the menu bar and select Tools > Folder Options. Click on the "View" tab and under "Hidden files and folders", select the option "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" and press the "Apply" button and click on "OK". Then you will be able to see the hidden AppData folder under C:\Users\<USER NAME>\

This is assuming you have a English version of Windows, but if you are using the Finnish version, the process will be the same, except it will be in Finnish. :p

Awesome! :) Feel free to invite any other friends to the server as well.

Like I said earlier, the game's still a work in progress, so there's bound to be bugs. Feel free to build and do whatever you want! :p

To build stuff, you have to collect minerals and blocks, so to start off, you can dig the blocks around you by holding down the left click. Once it breaks, a block will appear; if you grab it, it will show in your inventory. To place a block, press the right click.

Happily I managed to find some coal so I could make some torches to my cave :D
And I also found flint now I just need to find iron somewhere.. Gotta make my cave much deeper today :P
Put a tree growing in the cave, do I need to give water to it to grow? :D

@Yahoo: Not sure if a tree will grow in a cave, but it will definitely grow in the surface world, as long as you're not growing it at the peak height for the game.

I dumped my original house and am turning it into a 'Tower of Bab-il', a tower that reaches high into the sky, as well as burrowing into the deepest parts of the world. Building a new, larger home on a separate island. 8-)

At least it didnt die yet :p
Put a little pond next to it :D
Havent played multiplayer much. Single player so much less bugs.
Yesterday I tried multiplayer and I had skeleton bugged inside my door :D

Got cool home coming up in single player :D
I think that Im gonna take some screenshots of it when I get it ready.
Got watch tower, church, cave, some crops growing and garden there.
I just need a house haha. Been living in the cave.

One nice thing I found underground. I dropped into the center of earth xD
Went so deep that I found something that looked like water, it was blue. But when I jumped into it (Im idiot yea),
I dropped to the center of earth and died xD It was like going through space.
And I never found lava >.>

Finally finished the Tower of Bab-il and the castle on the island. :p Took a while to collect all the materials to build the two buildings. :p

EDIT: Here's the current map of the server world; only territory explored by players is shown.

Server has been updated with the new version of Minecraft! Get it from the spoiler link above! This version is even easier to use; just unzip it, run it, select a name, checkbox "Force Update", go to Multiplayer and type in huh.homeftp.net and play!
