Nintendo's "Revolution" System Now Known As "Wii"

Post by Yoon »

Nintendo's next-generation "Revolution" console has an official name now:

Nintendo Revolution named Wii
17:00, Apr 27th by Ben Parfitt
Nintendo’s next gen console will be known as Wii.
The console, previously known as the codename revolution, has been officially named ahead of further announcements at E3.

A statement from the Japanese games giants today explained: “While the code-name “Revolution” expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.

"Wii will put people more in touch with their games … and each other. But you’re probably asking: What does the name mean? Wii sounds like “we,” which emphasizes this console is for everyone.

"Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii. Wii has a distinctive “ii” spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.

And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd. So that’s Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because, it’s really not about you or me. It’s about Wii."

"Wii?" What a lame name for a system. :-/ It's code-name "Revolution" sounded a lot better. Looks like it's official too, seeing this: http://revolution.nintendo.com/

Yes, Revolution sounds much better. Quit complaining about the controller though. Haven't you heard of shell controls?

Nintendo just released official specifications on "Wii", according to DailyTech:

Nintendo opens up more details about its Wii console

Just a few hours after Nintendo launched the Wii, its official Wii website has gone live with all the latest "specifications" of the company's new console. One of the main features that Nintendo is boasting is the fact that the Wii will be able to play over twenty year's worth of Nintendo games. Not only that, the Wii will also be able to play all the classic Sega and TurboGrafx 16 games. Nintendo says that its Wii will also be able to support games from indie developers. Whether or not users will be able to create home brewed software for the Wii will remain to be seen. The Wii will also accept 80mm GameCube discs.

As written previously, the Wii will ship with a PowerPC CPU jointly developed between IBM and Nintendo. Nintendo says the codename of the processor is Broadway and was manufactured using a 90nm fabrication process. IBM claims the PowerPC CPU is based on the 750FX processor designed by the company several years ago.

System memory will come in at 512MB of internal flash memory. The Wii will also be home to a number of memory ports for reading back compact flash and SD cards and also be equipped with two USB 2.0 ports. For network communications, the Wii only comes equipped with 802.11b/g wireless capabilities but Nintendo says that a USB-to-Ethernet adapter will be available. Nintendo DS owners will be happy to know that their hand-held will be able to wirelessly communicate with the Wii.

On Nintendo's official Wii hardware "specifications" page, the GPU of the console is listed as still being developed with ATI. Whether this means that the GPU is still being tuned or there was simply a grammatical error on the site is up in the air. Very little is known about the Wii's GPU, codenamed Hollywood except that it is part of ATI's R520 family.
Not only will this system play all games from past Nintendo systems (including Gamecube), it will also be able to play classic Sega and Turbografx 16 games too.

For those that are not fond of remote controller, there will be a standard-style controller too:

I still don't like the name...

I agree with you guys. I liked the name revolution better. WTF is wii supposed to mean anyway.

Its good they introduce a normal controller too, but I still think you'll get the remote controller standard with the purchase of the console. if they dont introduce a normal one they will lose lots of people I think. As you already said, who would want to play NFS with a remote?

Maybe Wii means We're Incredible Idiots? who knows. :P

Hmm, there are a lot of impressive looking games for Wii on display at E3 right now. Still debating if I will get one, but the highly speculated price of $199 for a Wii is looking attractive, especially since Sony made the official announcement that the PlayStation 3 will cost $499 for the 20 GB model and $599 for the 60 GB model at launch.
