ZSNES is Back After 19 Years: Super ZSNES Introduced

Modern Vintage Gamer, a fantastic YouTube channel that explores fascinating engineering topics around classic game development and emulation, has released a video covering Super ZSNES, a new GPU-based Super Nintendo emulator.

Built by the original developers behind ZSNES, first released in 1997, with its final version in 2007, developers zsKnight and Demo are back with a modern take on their classic project. Super ZSNES carries forward the spirit of the original emulator, but is essentially a full rewrite designed for modern systems.

One of the most exciting changes is its shift to GPU-based emulation, rather than relying primarily on the CPU. This opens the door to a range of new features, including high-resolution widescreen support, enhanced visual effects like 3D depth perception, and more.

Personally, this is especially exciting for me. ZSNES was the very first Super Nintendo emulator I used back in the day on my old Pentium II PC, it was how I was able to run SNES games at full speed. Seeing the original developers return to build a successor all these years later feels like a full-circle moment.

Be sure to check out the video from Modern Vintage Gamer for a deeper dive into Super ZSNES! Super ZSNES is now available for download on Windows, MacOS Android, with iOS coming soon!
